Humans and Animals: an eternal bond

A new exhibition at the Goulandris National Museum of Natural History brings archaeology and natural history together.

23.10.2026

The Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum and the Goulandris National Museum of Natural History have joined forces to present the temporary exhibition “Humans and Animals: an eternal bond”, which will be hosted at the Goulandris Museum from 18 November 2026 to 30 April 2027.

The exhibition explores the complex and enduring relationship between humans and animals, highlighting their role in everyday life, the economy, religion, mythology and art. By bringing archaeology and natural history together, it reveals different aspects of a relationship that has evolved over thousands of years and remains relevant today.

More than 130 archaeological objects from the collection of the Canellopoulos Museum are presented alongside natural history exhibits from the Goulandris Museum and zoological remains from the comparative collection of the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

The exhibition unfolds across two complementary sections, combining archaeological evidence with interactive experiences in the permanent zoological galleries. A rich educational programme and activities designed for different audiences further encourage dialogue about the relationship between humans, animals and the natural environment.

The collaboration between the two museums is particularly significant as the Canellopoulos Museum undergoes renovation. Presenting selected works from its collection in a different setting allows the Museum to maintain its connection with the public while creating new opportunities to discover ancient Greek art and culture.

The exhibition is made possible with the sponsorship of the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation. This support reflects the Foundation’s longstanding commitment to promoting cultural heritage and carrying forward the legacy of its founders through collaborations that broaden access to knowledge and bring culture, science and society closer together.

Dates: 18 November 2026 – 30 April 2027
Venue: Goulandris National Museum of Natural History, 100 Othonos Street, Kifissia
