Grant in support of the work of Social Supermarkets for the provision of moral and material aid to the underprivileged. The non-profit society “Social Supermarket” was founded by the Marinopoulos SA company and, in collaboration with the country’s three largest municipalities, was the first to open social supermarkets which operated successfully in Athens, Piraeus and Thessaloniki in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
This was a concerted effort against poverty and social exclusion for families in need, through the weekly provision of basic goods which would ensure a dignified living for these people.
By 2012, 6,000 families in need—some 15,000 individuals in dire financial circumstances—had benefited from the Social Supermarket programme. Each social supermarket catered to 200 families per semester, who were allocated a monthly sum according to the socioeconomic criteria determined by the municipal social services. Marinopoulos SA invested more than €10m for the supply and operation of the Social Supermarkets.
