The re-exhibition of the Elefsina Archaeological Museum is the subject of the Grant Agreement, which was signed between the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Pavlos and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation. The Agreement was signed by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, the President of the Foundation Nellos Canellopoulos and the Treasurer Alexandra Papalexopoulou – Benopoulou. The amount of the grant on behalf of the Canellopoulos Foundation is 500,000 euros.
As Lina Mendoni noted “with the kind donation of the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation, the work for the re-exhibition of the Elefsina Archaeological Museum can proceed rapidly and be completed in time, based on the studies approved by the Museum Council of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The city of Elefsina, with its extremely important history and archaeological wealth, needs a museum that respects and honours this important heritage. With the re-exhibition of the existing Museum and the creation of the new Archaeological Museum in the area of the Old Olive Oil Factory, whose purchase – after the completion of time-consuming procedures – is imminent from the Ministry of Culture and Environment, Elefsina acquires appropriate infrastructure in order to meet the increased demands of the organization of the European Capital of Culture for the year 2023.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation Nellos Canellopoulos noted, “The re-exhibition of the wonderful exhibits hosted by the Archaeological Museum of Elefsina in accordance with modern museological standards is a project of particular importance, in view of the European Capital of Culture for the year 2023. The Board of Directors of the Foundation was pleased to accept the proposal of the Ministry of Culture and Sports to undertake part of the funding of the Museum’s reopening and we warmly thank the officials of the Ministry for their cooperation and the opportunity to contribute. The excellent aesthetic and functional design of the project will ensure a unique experience for visitors to the Museum from around the world, with respect for the exhibits and the wider archaeological site.”
