Despotiko: A Unique Archaeological Complex in the Aegean

Archaeological Excavation and Restoration Works

23.01.2026

Despotiko, located opposite Antiparos, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Cyclades. Systematic excavations have brought to light an extensive sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, providing valuable insights into the religious, political, and economic life of the Archaic Aegean and highlighting the island’s pivotal role within the network of sanctuaries of the period.

Canellopoulos Foundation has long supported the archaeological research and the enhancement of Despotiko, making a substantial contribution to the preservation, study, and promotion of a monument of exceptional importance. This support reflects the Foundation’s enduring commitment to the protection of cultural heritage and the advancement of scholarly research.

In 2025, systematic excavation work continued at Despotiko and Tsimintiri under the auspices of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, directed by Giannos Kouragios, with the participation of I. Daifa and A. Alexandridou. During the four-week excavation period, works included excavation, documentation, and conservation of architectural remains and movable finds, as well as restoration interventions, carried out with the contribution of the excavation and restoration team. The works involved the long-standing collaborating archaeologists, marble craftsmen, and conservators who have supported the excavation program in previous years.

Thanks to the continued excavation activity and restoration works, Despotiko is steadily emerging as a living field of scientific research and cultural engagement. Canellopoulos Foundation remains a committed supporter of this long-term effort, backing initiatives that connect the past with the present and ensure the transmission of cultural heritage to future generations.
