The Archaeological Society of Athens was founded in 1837 by a group of scholars and politicians, on the initiative of Constantine Belios, with the aim of finding, restoring and completing the antiquities of Greece in a difficult period after the War of 1821. As an independent Scientific Foundation, it is able to assist the Greek State in the protection, enhancement and study of Greek antiquities and, when necessary, undertakes the management and execution of projects. An important area of the work of the Archaeological Society of Athens is its publications.
